The answer depends on the breed of hamster. As stated before, Syrian hamsters are able to eat this diverse fruit. However, Dwarf hamsters and Robo hamsters cannot. This is due to the high levels of sugar. We’ll be going into this more later on in this blog.

Apples, when given in moderation, can be a great and healthy snack for your hamster. The RSPCA suggest apple as a great food for them. Some of the benefits of applies include:

  • Vitamin C removes toxins from your hamster and improves their overall health
  • Dietary Fibres can improve your hamster’s digestive system and protect them from illness!
  • Antioxidants protect against the effects of ageing, such as cancer.
  • Calcium improves your hamster’s bones and teeth.

Risks of apple

Although Syrian hamsters do eat apple, too much apple is a problem for your hamster. There’s some serious risks to your hamster’s health if you feed them too much. Some of the risks include:

  • Syrian hamsters can easily get diabetes if they eat more than the recommended amount of apple. This can seriously lower their lifespan due to the sugar.
  • Make sure to wash the apple as well before serving. This stops your hamster being hurt by pesticides.
  • Make sure to remove the seeds from the apple. They contain cyanide which could hurt your hamster.
  • Remove uneaten apple from the cage to stop your hamster eating rotten apple.

What parts of the apple can a hamster eat

There are so many types of apple that you could be confused! Apple juice, Apple seeds, Apple skin. So many! Let’s look through some of the types of apple and if your hamster is able to eat it!

Apple Skins

Apple skins are absolutely fine for Syrian Hamsters! They contain all of the same nutrients as apples and therefore you can feed them the same quantity! Just make sure that they are washed!

Apple Seeds

You should not feed Apple Seeds to your hamster! They contain cyanide which could be seriously dangerous for your hamster and therefore you shouldn’t give them Apple Seeds. Deseed them!

Apple Cores

Apple cores are fine for your hamster, just make sure that you remove the seeds before you feed it to your hamster! Just stick to the quantities that we recommend!

Apple Juice

We don’t recommend giving juice of any kind to your hamster. It doesn’t have all of the nutrients and contains added sugar. It also can cause diarrhoea if you feed them too much!

Dried Apple

Can hamsters eat dried apples? We don’t recommend that you give your hamster dried apple. It is sticky and can stick to your hamster’s poach. It also has added sugar so you shouldn’t give it to your pet.
