What are Cranberries?

Cranberries are a delicious fruit which grows from shrubs in many parts of the world. They can be made into juice, sauce, jam and can also be eaten on their own! They started to be grown in North America and the United States produces most of the world’s cranberries.

Can Hamsters Eat Cranberries?

As we stated before, absolutely! Syrian and Dwarf hamsters can both eat this delicious fruit. We don’t recommend it for dwarf hamsters though, this is sadly due to the large amount of sugar that is contained in cranberries. If you feed your hamster too much sugar, they can have a lot of problems!

How to give your hamster Cranberries

When you are giving treats, such as this food, to your pet, always make sure you are holding them or make sure that you are close to them. This is because giving treats to your hamster can strengthen your bond and assist in socializing them. Only give a small amount to your hamster at first, this is to figure out if they like cranberries. There’s no point giving your hamster a lot of it if they just ignore it! Your hamster might put the food in their cheek poaches though.

Make sure that you wash the fruit beforehand. This gets rid of any of the chemicals that may have been on the cranberries to protect it whilst it was growing. Pesticides can hurt your hamster’s health.

Consider feeding this fruit to your hamster as part of a daily diet including treats like pumpkin seedscabbage and carrots! Lots of fruit and vegetables are great for your ham!

How many cranberries should you feed your hamster?

You should feed your hamster a minimum amount of cranberries, this is because of the sugary contents within the fruit. Syrian hamsters can eat more than Robos due to their size! Dwarf hamsters can’t eat any!

How many cranberries should a Syrian hamster eat?

Syrians can eat the most cranberries, this is because of their size! Syrians can tolerate the most amount of sugar which reduces their risk of getting diabetes. Give your hammy 2 cranberries every week. This might not seem like enough, but there’s a lot of sugar within these sweet berries!

How many cranberries should a Roborovski hamster eat?

Robos can eat cranberries, but not as many as Syrians. As stated before, this is because of the high sugar content within it! Give your Robo hamster a single cranberry every week. This might not seem like a lot to us, but hammies are small animals!

How many cranberries should a Dwarf hamster eat?

Winter White dwarf hamsters, Chinese hamsters and Campbell Dwarf hamsters can’t eat any cranberries. This is because of the high sugar content. These types of pet can get obese and develop diabetes extremely quickly! This means that we have to protect them by reducing the amount of sugar in their diet to a minimum.

What type of Cranberries can a hamster eat?

As we stated before, there’s so many different types of cranberries! This can lead to confusion as there is not a lot of discussion as to whether hamsters can eat some of the other cranberry products that exist. This guide will now take you through some of the most popular cranberry products to see if we can give them to our pets.

Cranberry Jam

We don’t recommend giving your hamster Cranberry Jam. This is because of the high sugar content, as Jam often contains a lot more sugar than the raw product. Jam also removes a lot of the vital nutrients and vitamins that are contained within cranberries. Cranberry jam can lead to obesity and diabetes in all types of hamsters. Stick to other products!

Cranberry Juice

We never recommend giving your hamster juice of any form. This is because juice removes many of the vital vitamins and nutrients that are contained within the fruit. Added sugars are often added as well, this can lead to a whole host of issues for your hamster. It doesn’t matter what type of juice it is, hamsters should never drink cranberry juice!

Dried Cranberries

Dried cranberries are fine for your hamster, just make sure that they are organic. Many processed food contain extra added chemicals and sugar which can hurt your hamster. As long as they are 100% organic, you should be fine! We would still recommend fresh cranberries though as dried cranberries do remove some of the vital nutrients. You can dry cranberries yourself to ensure that they are 100% organic!

Cranberry Sauce

Cranberry sauce is often eaten with our Christmas dinners, but can hamsters partake in this as well? The answer is no, sadly. Cranberry sauce suffers the same issues as Cranberry Jam, many of the core nutrients are removed and extra sugar is often added. Stick to dried and fresh cranberries, they are the best for your hamster!

Conclusion
