What is Kiwi

Kiwi is a delicious citrus fruit which is unfortunately high in sugar. This means that it can only be given to your pet in small amounts! It is native to China but it is also produced in Europe and North America! It is usually green and can be highly nutritious. No wonder people are asking if they hamster can eat it!

Can Hamsters Eat Kiwi?

As stated before, the answer is ‘sort of‘. Syrian and Robo hamsters can have a small amount of Kiwi but we really don’t recommend it for Dwarf hamsters. This is due to the high sugar content which can hurt your Dwarf ham if they have too much of it. Check further on in the article for quantity recommendations!

How to give your hamster Kiwi

When you are giving treats, such as this food, to your hamster, always make sure you are holding them or make sure that you are close to them. This is because giving treats to your hamster can strengthen your bond and assist in socializing them. Only give a small amount to your hamster at first, this is to figure out if they like kiwi. There’s no point giving your hamster a lot of it if they just ignore it! Your hamster might put the food in their cheek poaches though.

Make sure that you wash the fruit beforehand. This gets rid of any of the chemicals that may have been on the fruit to protect it whilst it was growing. Pesticides can hurt your hamster’s health.

Consider feeding kiwi to your hamster as part of a daily diet including treats like pumpkin seedscabbage and carrots! Lots of fruit and vegetables are great for your ham!

How much Kiwi should you feed your hamster

The amount of Kiwi that you should be feeding your pet depends on their breed! Syrians can have more than Robos and Dwarfs can’t have any at all! This is due to the capacity of the hamster’s digestive systems! Syrians have a stronger digestive system that can cope with more Kiwi, hence the increased amount.

How much Kiwi can Syrian Hamsters eat?

Syrians are the largest domesticated hamsters and therefore can have the most Kiwi. Give them a small amount twice a week. We recommend a serving around the size of their claws. That size should be perfect for them. Anymore and even a Syrian’s digestive system can face issues.

How much Kiwi can Robo Hamsters eat?

Robos are smaller than Syrians and therefore can only tolerate a small amount of Kiwi. Give them a claw-sized amount every week. Robos have smaller claws so they will automatically be having less than Syrians! Giving your Robo hamster too much Kiwi can lead to diabetes.

How much Kiwi can Dwarf Hamsters eat?

Winter White dwarf hamsters, Chinese hamsters and Campbell Dwarf hamsters cannot eat any of this fruit. This is because of the acid and sugar that is contained within this citric fruit. It is unsafe and can hurt their digestive system. Consider some more suitable treats like corn or lettuce.

Benefits of Kiwi

There’s plenty of benefits of Kiwi. Some people even call it a superfood! What’s good for humans is often good for hamsters, in terms of nutritional benefits. Therefore we can see what benefits Kiwi can bring to your hamster. Kiwi contains:

  • Vitamin C . This improves your hamster’s immune system and ensures that they stay nice and wrong!
  • Dietary Fibers – These are a great digestive aid and can protect your hamster’s digestive system!
  • Iron – This protects your hamster’s blood and ensures that it is filled with what it needs!
  • Magnesium – This can lower your hamster’s blood pressure and protects their muscles.
  • Calcium – This protects your hamster’s teeth and bones.

Risks of Kiwi

When it comes to hamster treats, there’s always such thing as too much! Hamsters can only eat a small amount of food each day and this means that their digestive system can become overworked if they eat too much! Some of the risks associated with excessive Kiwi intake include:

  • Diabetes. The high sugar content in Kiwi can cause diabetes in your hamster. This can shorten their lifespan and hurt their health.
  • Obesity. This is again due to the high sugar content. Obesity will dramatically worsen your hamster’s health.
  • Acidity. Kiwi is a citric fruit and therefore has a lot of citric acid. This can hurt your hamster’s digestive system
  • Diarrhoea. Kiwi has a lot of water contained within it. Too much water can lead to diarrhoea and dehydration.

What types of Kiwi can Hamsters eat?

There’s plenty of types of Kiwi. This can include the actual parts of the Kiwi as well as other products that are made out of the citric fruit. Let’s look and see if your pet can eat them!

Kiwi Skin

The Kiwi Fruit’s skin has the same nutritional profile as the kiwi flesh. This means that there’s unlikely to be any other risks by giving your hamster kiwi skin. They might not like it though! Give your hamster a tiny bit to see if they like it.

Kiwi Seeds

We don’t recommend giving your hamster the seeds. You can take them out easily and they can be a choking risk. Better safe than sorry, especially when hamsters cannot vomit if they are choking!

Kiwi Juice

We never recommend feeding your hamster juice of any fruit. This is because nutrition is often taken out of the fruit by juicing it. Kiwi juice also has added sugar which can add to the risk of diabetes and obesity. Stick to normal Kiwi!

Dried Kiwi

We don’t recommend giving your pet dried kiwi. This is because it can be sticky and contain extra added sugars. The dried kiwi could stick to your hamster’s poach and injury your pet. It also doesn’t have a lot of nutrients left in it.

Conclusion – Can Hamsters Eat Kiwi?

So in conclusion, can hamsters eat Kiwi? Yes and no! Syrians and Robos can have a small amount but Dwarfs should stay away from this citric fruit! We’ve also looked at how to give your pet Kiwi and the exact quantities in which they should be given it. Kiwi contains plenty of benefits, but also plenty of risks if you overfeed your hamster.
