It really depends on the individual hamster! None of my hamsters has enjoyed mealworms – much to my disappointment! However, this doesn’t mean that your hamster won’t like mealworms. We recommend giving them a small amount of mealworm to see if they take it from you. If they don’t, don’t be disappointed! There are so many other treats you can give your hamster.
How to feed mealworms to your hamster?
When you are giving treats, such as mealworms, to your hamster, always make sure you are holding them or make sure that you are close to them. This is because giving treats to your hamster can strengthen your bond and assist in socializing them. Only give a small amount to your hamster at first, this is to figure out if they like this treat. There’s no point giving your hamster a lot of it if they just ignore it! Your hamster might put the food in their cheek poaches though.
Unless you are experienced, make sure that the mealworm is dead before feeding it to your hamster. Alive mealworms may bite your hamster and cause health problems.

You can get dried mealworms from your local pet store, and we recommend this. We don’t recommend sourcing mealworms from the wild though as these could cause health problems for your hamster.

How many mealworms can Syrian hamsters eat?
Syrians are the largest breed of hamster and this means that they can eat the most mealworms! Give your Syrian hamster a maximum of 3 mealworms a day. This is enough for them to feel the many benefits, but not too many that they can’t eat anything else! Syrian hamsters have a strong digestive system, so they can eat the most mealworms.
How many mealworms can Robo hamsters eat?
Robos are smaller than Syrians, so they should eat a smaller amount of mealworms. Give them a maximum of 3 mealworms every other day. This is a slight decrease from Syrian hamsters and this is due to their weaker digestive system. Robos need to eat other things and too many mealworms could fill them up.
How many mealworms can Dwarf hamsters eat?
Dwarf hamsters are tiny, and therefore should only eat a very small amount of cricket. Give them a few mealworms every week, and ensure that it is cut up into little pieces. This is to ensure that your hamster doesn’t choke whilst eating it. These should be an occasional treat for your furry friend and nothing more!
